MORE ABOUT DENTALS

When does my pet need a dental?

Your pet’s teeth should be checked on at least an annual basis. At your annual vaccination visit, our vets or vet nurses will check your pet’s teeth for you and give a recommendation.

However, if you notice that your pet has:

  • Bad breath
  • Tartar build up
  • Dropping food
  • Bleeding gums
  • Reluctance to chew
  • Weight loss

it is a very good idea to book a free consult with one of our vet nurses and have their teeth checked.

Dental Xray

When does my pet need dental x-rays?

We now include dental x-rays as a part of our dental packages as these assist us to see what is happening underneath the gumline, resulting in a better diagnosis for your pet.

Many dental issues start below the gumline, invisible during a normal check-up. Dental radiographs (X-rays) help us detect:

  • Infected roots or abscesses
  • Bone loss
  • Hidden tooth fractures or resorption (common in cats)
  • Retained roots after extractions

If you are unsure then book a free consultation with one of our vet nurses.

    What happens on dental day?

    • General anaesthesia: for safety and a pain-free, thorough exam.
    • Full oral assessment and dental X-rays
    • Professional cleaning (scaling and polishing).
    • Treatment plan, based on what we find.
    • Simple extractions or minor issues: usually handled the same day (Not included in price and would be discused).
    • Complex or multiple extractions: may require advanced surgical planning. (Not included in price and would be discused).

      Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be called before extractions?

Yes, unless you have already given permission ahead of time. We strive for clear and open communication.

Why might a second procedure be needed?

      Sometimes, our dental X-rays uncover:

      • Multiple teeth requiring extraction.
      • Complex or fractured roots.
      • Major bone loss.
      • Severe feline tooth resorption.

In these cases, a second, carefully planned procedure is the safest choice for your pet’s welfare. This allows us to keep anaesthetic times short and ensure all proper surgical and pain control measures are in place.

Does needing two dental procedures mean something is wrong?

No. Sometimes extra care and extra time are required to treat advanced disease properly and safely.

Is needing two dental procedures common?

Yes, especially for older animals, rescue pets, or cats with hidden disease.

Why not do it all at once?
      • Anaesthetic Safety: Shorter procedures are safer, especially for older pets.
      • Complexity: Some surgical cases need more time, planning, or equipment.
      • Best Practice: We will always discuss major findings and costs with you first, just like your own dentist would.
